Mrs Barker – Class Teacher
Hello! My name is Mrs. Barker and I’m the Year 3 class teacher. I’ve worked at St John’s since 2008 and have loved every minute. We have such a fantastic school with amazing children and the best team of staff! I also have the responsibility of Mathematics across the school. My favourite subjects in school are Maths and PE.
In my spare time, I love spending every second with my beautiful boys Hugh and Evan. We love going for walks along the coast enjoying the sea and sand. I am a big Sunderland fan and enjoy keeping fit!

Year 3 Important Information
Hello and welcome to Year 3. First of all I want to say thank you for getting your children back into school and adhering to all of the new changes. I hope that your child has settled well.
Here is some important and useful information for our Year 3 children and parents.
Homework
Homework in Year 3 will be as follows:
Monday – Spellings to learn for Friday’s spelling test. It is really important to learn spelling and understand the rule each week.
Very shortly I will be sending home a list of websites that your child can access to enhance learning.
Due to the current situation we will not be sending homework books/ reading journals home. We do not expect spelling sheets to be returned to school.
PE
Physical Education is a compulsory part of the school curriculum, therefore all children need to have their PE kit in school. In Year 3, our PE days are Monday and Friday. Children are encouraged to come into school dressed in their PE kit. At the moment, children’s PE kit consists of:
plain white t-shirt
black shorts or tracksuit bottoms
trainers or plimsolls.
Children can wear their red school jumpers over their white t-shirts.
Swimming
Under normal circumstances, our Year 3 children have the opportunity to learn to swim at Woodhouse Close Leisure Centre in Bishop Auckland. Of course, at the moment we are not able to go for weekly swimming lessons. As soon as it is considered safe, we will let you know before we begin our swimming sessions again.
Reading Books
Some children in Year 3 will not be receiving a regular weekly reading book. We are encouraging children to become more independent readers. Children will be choosing their own books and reading during our daily in-class ‘Accelerated Reader’ sessions. Every child will be heard reading regularly in class in our Accelerated Reader sessions and Guided Reading Group sessions where adults regularly assess and monitor your child’s progress.
Additional Information
Mrs Barker is our class teacher, Mrs Pearson and Mrs Eltringham also work in Year 3 on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Rose works in Year 3 on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Finally, if you have any questions or need any further information about anything to do with school, please ask!
As always, thank you for your continued support.
