Year 1 Staff
Mrs Watson – Class Teacher
Hello, my name is Mrs Watson and I teach our lovely Year 1 children at St John’s. During their time in Year 1 I see our children begin to grow into mature young people and it is fab to see! Teaching has always been a passion of mine since I was young and I feel extremely lucky to be teaching in such a wonderful school like St John’s. I wouldn’t want to be working anywhere else! Within the whole school, I have the responsibility of looking after History and Geography. I think it is super important for our children to learn about the past and how it has impacted our lives today, especially in Shildon!
When I am not at school, I spend my time running after my cheeky nearly one-year-old son, Harry. I love family days out with Sash (our energetic labrador!) and playing Netball.
Miss French – Enhanced Teaching Assistant
Hi, my name is Miss French and I am an enhanced teaching Assistant in Year 1. It is my first year at this school and I am really excited to be working here. I have been a Teaching Assistant for 7 years and have worked across primary school from Nursery up to Year 6. When I am not in school I enjoy baking and going for walks with my friends and family to explore new places.
Year 1 Important Information
Homework
In Year 1 children will receive spelling homework weekly. This is to enhance their learning in Phonics – the children will be taught sounds and words throughout the week and will receive their spellings on a Monday. The children will be tested on these words on a Friday. Children may use the worksheet provided or additional notepads, paper etc. to practise their spelling list. The worksheet does not need to be handed back in to school.
Reading Books
Children will receive reading books every Friday. We will hear the children read throughout the week on a one-to-one basis. Children will also read to adults during other activities such as Guided Reading. The reading books that are sent home must be practised numerous times at home so that the children become fluent and confident when reading.
PE
During Spring Term, Year 1 children will be completing all PE lessons on a Tuesday and Thursday.
Attendance & Punctuality
At St. John’s Primary School, we are committed to providing pupils with the best educational opportunities available. To enable pupils to benefit from these opportunities it is essential that parents ensure their regular attendance.
The impact on children’s education through poor attendance, resulting in lost learning, is huge! Our children have already had their education disrupted due to the pandemic and every minute in school counts! To prevent anyone falling behind with their learning, we need to continue to work together to make sure that your child is in school and on time every day. We encourage all of our children to be at school for 8.40am for a prompt start to the day.
Additional Information
It would be extremely helpful if you could name your child’s uniform (especially the jumpers) in case they are misplaced throughout the school day.
Finally, we look forward to getting to know you as we support your child together. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the team.
Thank you for your continued support.
