Miss Bramley – Class Teacher
I’m Miss Bramley and I teach Year 1 at St John’s. I have taught Year 1 since I started teaching in 2012, it’s my favourite age group to teach because the children are so much fun and so keen to learn! I am also Science co-ordinator, so it is my job to ensure children achieve in this subject across school. Science is so important because it affects every part of our lives, sometimes without us even realising it.
When I am not teaching, I am at the gym, cycling or spending time with friends and family.
Mrs Oxenham – HLTA
Hi, I am Mrs. Oxenham and I am a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant. I have worked at St. John’s for 21 years. My main experiences are in Early Years and Key Stage One. I am currently working in Year 1 with Miss. Bramley, where I have been for the last 4 years supporting pupils learning and delivering intervention groups.
When I am not in school I enjoy walking, gardening and looking after my grandchildren.
Mrs Whensley – Support Assistant
Hi. My name is Mrs. Whensley. I have worked at St Johns for 23 years in Early Years and Key Stage 1. This year my role is a TA support in Year 1.
When I am at home I enjoy looking after my Grandchildren and walking my dog. Max.
Year 1 Important Information
Homework
In Year 1 children will receive spelling homework weekly. This is to enhance their learning in Phonics – the children will be taught sounds and words throughout the week and will receive their spellings on a Monday. The children will be tested on these words on a Friday. Children may use the worksheet provided or additional notepads, paper etc. to practise their spelling list. The worksheet does not need to be handed back in to school.
Reading Books
Children will receive reading books every Friday. We will hear the children read throughout the week on a one-to-one basis. Children will also read to adults during other activities such as Guided Reading. The reading books that are sent home must be practised numerous times at home so that the children become fluent and confident when reading.
PE
During Autumn Term Year 1 children will be completing all PE lessons outside on a Monday and Friday afternoons. Therefore, we request that children come to school in clothes suitable for completing their PE activities but that they are comfortable and warm in throughout the rest of the day. More information on suitable clothing will follow.
Music
This year we have the exciting opportunity to have a Music teacher in Year 1. Her name is Miss Casewell and she will visit us on a Thursday afternoon. Children will learn about rhythm and pulse as well as some exciting and catchy songs.
Additional Information
It would be extremely helpful if you could name your child’s uniform (especially the jumpers) in case they are misplaced throughout the school day.
Finally, we look forward to getting to know you as we support your child together. If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the team.
Thank you for your continued support.
